Superbly Bleak and Creepy
Review of Possum (2018) by nezzkobdamned: 👍 8.2/10
Matthew Holness' Possum is bleak in every sense of the word. There's no joy to be found here, only a tortured mind in an increasingly unpleasant and broken world of its own creation.
This could be frustrating in the wrong hands, but Holness' slow-paced creeping despair really works for the film. It's an uncomfortable watch, but there's beauty in its grim structure.
Sean Harris is almost unrecognisable, save for his voice and puts in a superb performance full of tragic darkness that feels earned. The creepy design of the titular puppet is excellent too.
I can see how it has and will repel people, but I found it mesmerising.
