Late Bloomer
Review of The Pelican Brief (1993) by sophiemac: 👍 6.5/10
Unfortunately, the film isn't detailed at the start, so offers little to pique interest or tempt with a trail of breadcrumbs. It's not until much later that the pieces fall start fitting together and by then the moment is lost. It's like flirting with someone for hours, who takes ages to warm up when it finally does happen, then it's all over far too quickly. It holds such great promise, with a cast that most directors would trade an arm for, but because of the earlier missed opportunities they're not used to their full potential. It seems much more of a shame when you're aware of the page turning tour de force that is the written version. The book is magnificent, so start there.
