Ahh yes, this was what David Cronenberg was getting up to while writing Naked Lunch.

Like all of Clive Barker’s movies, they are utterly incredible concepts looking for a better movie. Not to say that Nightbreed is bad. No, far from it. But Barker has always been a better writer than director. He is too ambitious for his own good.

What does work is the unnatural tone to the world and large chip on Barker’s shoulders against systems that vilify those that just want to live life in peace.

What doesn’t is the obvious stunt cast of David Cronenberg. Don’t get me wrong, I love him in this, but it is so fucking distracting.
