It's Brutal(ly long)
Review of The Brutalist (2024) by kcookandcatsco: 👍 8.0/10
This one is perhaps most notable because I wrote the review for it after I tried to go see Love Hurts with a group of friends (I heard it was terrible; dodged a bullet there) at the AMC I was fired from, and they barred me from entering, so I watched The Brutalist instead as part of #OscarsHomework, and was a little salty about it.
Click the 'personal blog' button (it's not; it's on Medium, which is where I do my long form gonzo film criticism, but the personal blog button will take you there) to hear the whole sordid tale as I told it at the time, again, quite salty, lol.
As for the movie, well, it's WAY TOO LONG! It's incredible, don't get me wrong. I think it had perhaps two or three of the five best acting performances that year, Adrien Brody was, like, next-level, no notes or criticisms of the substance of the film but GOOD GOSLING, CORBET, it's WAY TOO LONG!
I muse in my review on Medium about how one might get to a more manageable length (also, amusingly, since I mostly pirate everything that isn't sent to me as a screener or that I don't see in theatres, this was filmed from inside a theatre and I had to sit through the film's actual intermission in real-time, because if I pressed anything, about four hundred pornographic popups would come roaring into frame), and break down some more of the particulars.
This is worth watching, but also, like, it's hard to justify fast-forwarding or skipping anything, either, so you're kind of committed for the runtime, which is [checks] hm, I'm getting an overflow error. I'll get back to you.
